Academy Professor Tapio Salmi and his colleagues at Åbo Akademi’s Laboratory of Industrial Chemistry and Reaction Engineering believe that international scientific conferences are an effective way to share the latest research data, while also being an inspiring way to get young researchers involved in the best international networks early on in their careers. 

“We have successfully applied to host the oldest and most prestigious conference in chemical reaction engineering, the International Symposium on Chemical Reaction Engineering (ISCRE28), in Turku in 2024. The Working Party on Chemical Reaction Engineering of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE) decided on this unanimously,” says Professor Salmi proudly.

“The first ISCRE was held in the 1950s, and the big names in the industry always attend the event. ISCRE28 will take place at the Logomo Event and Conference Centre in Turku from 17 to 19 June 2024. This conference is a global and world-class event as well as a major recognition for the Laboratory of Industrial Chemistry and Reaction Engineering,” Professor Salmi comments.

Associate Professor Katri Lindfors from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology has been named the new Tampere Congress Ambassador.

Katri Lindfors has been in the organizing committee of numerous Tampere Celiac Disease symposia, and she is a board member in the International Society for the Study of Celiac Disease (ISSCD).

Tampere Congress Ambassadors are Tampere University researchers whose input in summoning and organising international congresses has been significant. They represent the international top of their fields and are influential actors in scientific organisations. When travelling abroad, Tampere Congress Ambassadors represent Tampere University and local scientific knowhow, and they encourage local researchers to participate in organisational activities and in the organising of congresses. A new Tampere Congress Ambassador is chosen annually. 

The Congress Ambassadors programme is part of the larger Ambassador network of the City of Tampere. Tampere Convention Bureau coordinates this sub programme.

Helsinki won the bid to host the annual ECTS Congress of the European Calcified Tissues Society in winter 2020, just shortly prior to the Covid-19 outbreak.

In May 2022, lively discussions, hugs, laughter and smiling faces filled the halls of Messukeskus Helsinki. The joy of meeting face to face was tangible, as the very first hybrid ECTS conference attracted 730 people to Helsinki. 200 participants followed the scientific content online.

Sustainability played a vital role in the congress execution, especially in catering. Porcelain dishes and tap water, instead of bottled water, were some of the small actions to tackle the throw-away culture. 85 % of the food at the venue was locally sourced. A vegetarian day reduced the CO2 emissions by 958 CO₂e kg, while upholding the quality and innovativeness of the catering service. Participants were encouraged to use public transport and local students were involved in the organizing of the event.

Solo Sokos Hotel Helsinki is a high quality urban hotel with plenty of personal touch. The new era of the hotel, originally completed in 1930, draws inspiration from the colours, atmosphere and details of the Finnish capital. Hotel Helsinki was first opened in 1930 in connection with the commercial building of the Finnish Savings Bank. Once completed, it was the first large hotel in Finland. Over the years, Hotel Helsinki has gained more space, and today the entire building is in the hotel's use. 

The classical style building was originally designed by architect Pauli E. Blomstedt. During the 1.5-year renovation project, all 207 rooms, restaurants and public areas were completely renewed. In addition, a spectacular meeting & event space for up to 200 people was created.
