From wood to nanotechnology

The main fields of industry in the Jyväskylä region are machinery and automation, printing and communication, and wood processing. Special expertise also exists in the fields of paper making, energy, and environmental and information technologies.

These are complemented by growing new sectors such as wellness and nanotechnology. A number of international companies (including Metso, UPM-Kymmene, M-Real and Vapo) are located in Jyväskylä, with collaboration between higher education and business building the foundation of new entrepreneurial activity.

University city

The University of Jyväskylä is a highly popular multidisciplinary university with a total of seven faculties. It’s home to the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, which exerts considerable influence on the emerging field of wellness technology.

The Agora Center, a meeting place for people and technology, is an important research centre at the University of Jyväskylä. The centre aims to develop technology that serves people’s needs from a human perspective.

Jyväskylä is a great city to explore on foot since key services in the city centre are easily located within walking distance from one another. The city’s real gem is its pedestrian precinct, which serves as a venue for many cultural events and as a general rendezvous point for residents and visitors alike.

The Jyväskylä area offers numerous opportunities for recreation. In summer, visitors can enjoy a cruise on glittering Lake Päijänne, or try hiking, biking, boating, fishing, and even open-air dancing. In wintertime, there are various ski resorts that can accommodate both downhill and cross-country enthusiasts.
