From cultural heritage to a world-class hotel

15/4/2021

Scandic Grand Central Helsinki offers a global, unique hotel experience in the stunning historic Art Nouveau building, formerly known as the head office of Finland´s railway company, designed by Eliel Saarinen. The hotel interior has an old-fashioned charm which meets a modern style in an inspirational way and will be a unique event and meeting place in the heart of Helsinki.

Urban oasis with a relaxed local twist Eliel Saarinen’s Art Nouveau office building has been transformed into a hotel, with almost 500 rooms together with meeting and banquet facilities. The restauration and transformation process has paid great respect to the protected, highly valued building and was done in co-operation with the Finnish Heritage Agency. The northern wings of the original building are now connected by a modern new building, that utilizes Saarinen’s architecture and design language.

The soulful building reveals its original restored elements, layers of different eras, as well as surprising details. A memorable and stylish décor, fun details and a colorful world create a warm environment for the visitor, designed by Interior Design Architect Jaakko Puro. In addition to modern hotel décor, the guest encounters original details, original refurbished furniture, and light fixtures from different decades.

A place where classic and modern styles meet

The magnificently tall and wide corridors take hotel guests to timeless, elegant rooms with warm colors and a touch of trendy details. The soft, wide beds are the central point of the room. The rooms in the original building offer nostalgia with mullioned windows and thick walls. The hotel guests can also sit on the wide window niches and enjoy the views towards the Ateneum Art Gallery, the National Theatre, the railway station platforms, Kaisaniemi Park and Töölönlahti outdoor recreation area.

The large spaces of the original building are balanced by the modern rooms of the new-build. Some rooms offer great views of Kaisaniemi Park with wall-to-wall windows.

Festive elegance for events

The impressive Grand Ballroom banquet hall offers an unique setting with modern functionalities for dinners, parties, galas or cocktail parties for up to 500 people. The restored Supervisory Boardroom with its original Eliel Saarinen furniture gives flashbacks to 1910´s, while at the same time, mix together with modern technology.
